In the late Spring and Autumn period (771~476 BC), while traveling in various states, Confucius and his students were once trapped in a place between the state of Chen and the state of Cai, unable to get help from anywhere because they had lost contact with the outside world. This event was known in history books as “Being trapped between Chen and Cai” or “Running out of food supply between Chen and Cai”. This painting depicts Confucius and his student Yan Hui discussing Dao during the seven days of hardship when they were trapped. Even in such a bad situation, Confucius still went on with his teaching and talking about his Dao.

Yan Hui, top of the 72 best students of Confucius, was exemplary in terms of virtue and good conduct, and was the student Confucius was most proud of. One of Confucius’s well-known comments on Yan Hui was “What a fine man Hui was! Just one bowlful of rice, one dipperful of drink, living in a back alley—others couldn’t have endured such gloom, but he never let it affect his happiness. What a fine man Hui was!” Confucius regarded Yan Hui as the embodiment of virtue, a man humble and keen to learn.
